Welcoming support from all levels of government

August 31, 2010

Richard Petty FCPA

I am delighted by the strong support from government that we have received for CPA Congress. It is an indication of the good relationships that CPA Australia has developed with governments over time.

Keynote/opening addresses will be given by Premier Kristina Keneally in Sydney; Treasurer John Lenders in Melbourne; Treasurer Michael Aird in Hobart; Chief Minister Tom Pauling AO QC in Darwin; Deputy Premier the Hon Kevin Foley in Adelaide and Chief Minister Jon Stanhope in Canberra. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industrial Relations Simon Finn will represent Premier Anna Bligh in Brisbane. The fact that so many politicians at such high level have accepted our invitation to speak at CPA Congress is testament to the calibre of the event that we stage.

In addition, all the State Premiers and Chief Ministers in Australia have provided a foreword for CPA Congress 2010 in their jurisdiction. You may have seen an excerpt of their message in the printed brochure; the full text is in our online information. They are very aware of how CPA Congress helps finance, accounting, and business professionals to enhance their skills, and how it promotes opportunities for business growth. Obviously they understand how important it is to be able to Navigate the New!

Navigating the New, and Australia’s Federal Election

August 23, 2010

Paul Drum

The weekend’s tightly contested Federal election outcome resulted in a hung parliament in Australia – for the first time since 1940, according to the political historians.

The fact that there is no clear winner at this time means we are now in a kind of political limbo, with the future of issues such as the proposed minerals tax, company tax cuts, paid parental leave, broadband, a price on carbon emissions along with a raft of other policy measures now unclear in the short term at least.

However much of this will be more clear by the time CPA Congress rolls around. And in keeping with this year’s Congress theme of Navigating the New, I’ll be presenting at five of the Congresses on business and tax issues again this year, and I look forward to meeting many of you there.

Also for those who can’t make it in person this year, please note that we’re also offering Virtual Congress, so there’s no excuses for not participating, learning something new to enhance your careers and also enable you to get your CPD hours up!

In the meantime, and if you haven’t done so already, why not also check out CPA Australia’s Federal Election 2010 page. Regardless of the final election outcome, CPA Australia’s post election priorities are now well established and can be viewed on this site. We will pursue these priorities on behalf of members and the profession as we Navigate the New.

As always we look forward to your comments and feedback.

Your CPA Congress conversation starts now

Helen MitchellWhat matters most to finance and business professionals? What are the issues they want to debate and discuss? What are the topics they care about and want to know more?

These were the pressing questions we asked ourselves when planning for this year’s CPA Congress, and for this blog you are reading. CPA Congress is starting soon, and we’re here to form part of that story, along with you.

This year we’ve expanded the horizons of CPA Congress into more physical locations, and also into the virtual – this means that no matter where you are located in the world, you can participate in CPA Congress.

Welcome to CPA Congress 2010 – Navigate the New

August 2, 2010

Alex_Malley_FCPAIt’s my pleasure to be the first contributor to the 2010 CPA Congress blog. If there’s one thing that’s constant in this world, it’s change. That’s why I think Navigate the New is a great theme for CPA Congress. We have a new Prime Minister, new taxes, new issues to consider in terms of climate change and sustainability, new challenges from emerging markets, lessons from the GFC and much more. CPA Congress can help you learn what’s new, what it means for you and your business, and then work out how to deal with new challenges and stay healthy at the same time.

I’ll be dropping in on a few of the sessions on offer because I’m always keen to learn from others and benefit from their expertise. I’m looking forward to hosting some myself, in my ‘On the Couch’ slot where I talk to business leaders about how they realised their potential and got to where they are. Mingling with other delegates is a great way to make new contacts and spark some ideas for your business.

See you there!

Alex Malley, CEO of CPA Australia
